Job description
Your placement year at university could not have come at a more exciting time.
An undergraduate scheme at JLR is specifically designed to prepare you for a successful, long-term career with us. Surrounded by an innovative and dedicated team of industry experts, you’ll apply your learning and satisfy your curiosity for what’s possible.
Arrive curious. Discover opportunity.
Future Propulsion Systems Undergraduate Programme
Fossil fuels have dominated automotive propulsion since cars were introduced, but our priorities are now very different. By the middle of the decade, Jaguar will have undergone a renaissance to emerge as a pure-electric luxury brand – and you have the opportunity to help shape this. You will become a key part of the team, working in multiple departments during your placement, helping you develop a well-rounded understanding of the business.
Learning what it takes to deliver the high-quality propulsion systems of the future, you will evolve into an experienced member of the propulsion engineering community. To develop your skills and competencies, you will operate in a range of different environments using a mixture of engineering tools such as Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) and Computer Aided Design (CAD) plus data analysis techniques while working closely with customer groups. The scheme will also feature a number of placements, including one non-product rotation, and you will collaborate closely with your managers to identify placements suitable for your learning and growth.
In particular, you will gain a systems view of the entire delivery landscape for commodities and/or systems. At the same time, you will work closely with our programme management, engineering, procurement and manufacturing functions, plus our external engineering service provider as critical supply partners to create and deliver final completed products to quality, cost and time targets. We will look to you to bring a fresh mindset to everything we do and actively challenge the way we think.
During the Propulsion Undergraduate Programme, you could work in the Engineering Propulsion (EP) or Engineering Operations (EO) departments. You will be allocated to a department based on personal preferences and business needs.
Engineering Propulsion (EP)
Our EP team are leaders in the design, testing, validation and certification of world-class propulsion systems aimed at delivering driving experiences that our customers will love for life.
The scope of our propulsion systems is far-reaching and includes major commodity groups such as electric drive units, energy storage devices, engines, transmissions and drivelines, complemented by software system integration, calibration and control strategies.
We take a global perspective, and our teams carry out overseas testing and certification in world markets, gather market-specific feedback, interface with colleagues and supplier manufacturing plants around the globe, and collaborate cross-functionally with all our key stakeholders.
Engineering Operations (EO)
EO underpin technical innovation and product delivery with programme management, tools and processes plus specialist technical services to deliver our world-class products. A diverse team, EO harness a variety of skillsets, from project management, information management and data analytics to building and testing prototypes. EO are fundamentally involved in every state-of-the-art engineering process and are driving an exciting transformation in the way we engineer and deliver our products with class-leading technology and quality.
You could find yourself working as a battery test engineer, test data and software engineer, build engineer or facilities engineer. Every role will give you an exceptional opportunity to gain hands-on experience of working within future technology, business-critical projects supporting us to exceed our customers’ expectations.
Rewards and benefits
Our 2024 undergraduate programme salary will be £21,377. You’ll also enjoy a generous holiday allowance, a discounted car purchase and lease scheme for you and your family, an excellent pension scheme and access to a wide range of deals and discounts from retailers and sports clubs.
You will be applying your curiosity and creativity every day as you begin to hone your skills for a successful, impactful career. You own your development, and only you can make it happen. We’ll be right by your side in your pursuit of exceptional, and we’ll give you all the encouragement and support you need.
What we are looking for
You will need to be on track to achieve at least a 2.2 degree in mechanical, electronic, software, chemical, aeronautical, automotive, materials or environmental engineering, aerospace computer science, mechatronics, maths or physics.
In addition, you will have a real passion for problem-solving and the curiosity to understand business challenges and deliver innovative solutions. You will also have strong numerical and interpersonal skills and the confidence to champion new initiatives.
Please note that our undergraduate placement opportunities are open only to penultimate-year students (those who will be returning to their final year of study or on an integrated master’s after their placement with us).
