Industrial Operations: Manufacturing Undergraduate Programme - BAC and EPMC Centres

Job description

Your placement year at university could not have come at a more exciting time.

An undergraduate scheme at JLR is specifically designed to prepare you for a successful, long-term career with us. Surrounded by an innovative and dedicated team of industry experts, you’ll apply your learning and satisfy your curiosity for what’s possible.

Arrive curious. Discover opportunity.

Industrial Operations: Manufacturing

Manufacturing is at the heart of our industrial operations function, which incorporates our manufacturing, procurement and supply chain teams and consolidates accountability for the production of our vehicles. With thousands of vehicles being created every day across our production facilities, you will enjoy the opportunity to influence the future of car making.

Battery Assembly Centre (BAC) Undergraduate (Birmingham)

The BAC, based in Hams Hall, North Warwickshire, opened in 2019, and produces Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) batteries for our Range Rover and Range Rover Sport Hybrid models.

We are at the forefront of the JLR electrification journey, with one of the most innovative and technologically advanced facilities of its kind in the UK, employing next-generation production techniques and manufacturing technologies. In fact, we have the fastest production line in the company, along with numerous other exciting technologies – in robotics, lasers, 3D printing and Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs). The mountain of knowledge you will amass, along with solving some of the most exciting challenges, will make you a world-class engineer.

At the BAC, you can get involved with laser welding, manufacturing engineering, material planning & logistics (MP&L), quality and maintenance, using some of the latest cutting-edge technologies all under the supervision of a fantastic team, with extensive experience to aid your development. This is one of the best learning opportunities any undergraduate can undertake and one that will significantly strengthen your CV to accelerate your career with JLR.

Please note that you will often be required to be onsite from 7am, when our manufacturing shifts begin. We are based in a satellite site on the border of Birmingham and North Warwickshire, very close to both the M6 and M42.

Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Centre (EPMC) Undergraduate (Wolverhampton)

The EPMC works closely with the BAC and has been home to the production of the Ingenium family of advanced, ultra-efficient petrol and diesel engines since 2014. After this year, it will also produce electric drive units and battery packs for our next generation vehicles. We are creating a legacy for generations to come through a tenacious approach to continuous improvement and transforming how we manufacture propulsion products – so we will be recognised as a global benchmark for excellence. We are equally passionate about the people who work here, creating a supportive learning environment where there is equity and mutual respect for all.

You could build your skills in any of the following areas: Global Manufacturing Engineering (GME), MP&L, Production Operations or Internal Plant Quality. Wherever you focus, you will become an integral part of our team, as you support the delivery of innovative solutions to support our electrified future. We will allocate you to a department based on your personal preferences and our business needs.

Whatever your role, you will use your innovation and creativity to the full every day, as you develop all the skills for a fast-moving career. You will be provided with a rich, wide range of activities, which will include solving complex problems, providing technical expertise and undertaking continuous improvement activities, and will enjoy a blend of office-based and shopfloor activities. With ongoing support from industry-leading experts, backed by continual learning opportunities, you’ll quickly realise that our programmes are as inspiring as the vehicles you’ll help to create.

Rewards and benefits

Our 2024 undergraduate programme salary will be £21,377. You’ll also enjoy a generous holiday allowance, a discounted car purchase and lease scheme for you and your family, an excellent pension scheme and access to a wide range of deals and discounts from retailers and sports clubs.

You will be applying your curiosity and creativity every day as you begin to hone your skills for a successful, impactful career. You own your development, and only you can make it happen. We’ll be right by your side in your pursuit of exceptional, and we’ll give you all the encouragement and support you need.

What we are looking for

You will need to be on track to achieve at least a 2.2 degree in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) discipline (not including biology or life sciences).

BAC is particularly interested in students studying courses involving artificial intelligence (AI), environmental, robotics/controls/programming or manufacturing engineering.

In addition, you will have real passion for problem-solving and the curiosity to understand business challenges and deliver innovative solutions. You will also have strong numerical and interpersonal skills and the confidence to champion new initiatives.

Please note that our undergraduate placement opportunities are open only to penultimate-year students (those who will be returning to their final year of study or on an integrated master’s after their placement with us).
