An undergraduate scheme at JLR is specifically designed to prepare you for a successful, long-term career with us. Surrounded by an innovative and dedicated team of industry experts, you’ll apply your learning and satisfy your curiosity for what’s possible.
Arrive curious. Discover opportunity.
Industrial Operations: Manufacturing
Manufacturing is at the heart of our Industrial Operations function, which incorporates our manufacturing, purchasing and supply chain teams and consolidates accountability for the production of our vehicles.
Manufacturing is central to JLR, with thousands of vehicles being created every day across our production facilities. You will have the opportunity to influence the future of manufacturing. This award-winning scheme is aimed at undergraduates who have a passion for learning and a pioneering mindset: ambitious, innovative and determined individuals, who respect our heritage and can think beyond the challenges of today to build the cars of tomorrow. Whilst gaining wide-ranging hands-on experience and pursuing your ongoing studies, you will work on projects that are fundamental to our global success.
During the Programme, you could work in one of the following departments: Global Manufacturing Engineering (GME), Materials, Planning & Logistics (MP&L), Solihull Plant Paint, Solihull Plant Quality, Solihull Plant
Launch or Solihull Plant Trim and Final. You will be allocated to a department based on personal preferences and business needs.
Global Manufacturing Engineering (GME)
Our GME team supports the projects and innovation that enable our Reimagine strategy across our global locations. Join us and you will be responsible for the design, installation and commissioning of manufacturing facilities and processes to build the modern luxury vehicles of the future. You will be working with stakeholders across our enterprise, including product engineering, procurement and manufacturing operations to implement new products, processes and equipment, whilst driving future technology development.
We have opportunities across all our core technologies: body construction engineering, paint engineering, final assembly engineering, propulsion engineering, stampings engineering, logistics engineering and construction engineering, as well as roles within our dimensional systems and manufacturing research teams, which work across all technologies.
If you enjoy problem-solving and being at the heart of making things happen, then our GME roles will give you the opportunity to work throughout the end-to-end product lifecycle. Engaging multiple internal and external stakeholders and managing large capital investment change into our plants, you will quickly gain real-world experiences and play a key role in transforming our brands as we realise our future business transformation.
Solihull Plant: Materials, Planning & Logistics (MP&L)
MP&L manages the logistics and flow of parts from suppliers around the globe. We specialise in supplier management, material flow, parts delivery and vehicle planning for each production hall, and the operational management of our third-party logistics providers.
During this programme, you will learn what it takes to deliver the high-quality logistics operating model of the future and become an experienced member of the plant MP&L team. Working in a range of different environments, using a mixture of logistics toolsets, you will study problem-solving and data analysis techniques – rapidly developing your knowledge whilst providing comprehensive support to your team.
Solihull Plant: Paint
The Paint Process ME department is responsible for the introduction of new models and model year programmes, future materials and future feature offerings, including responsibility for the current engineering deliverables within our Solihull Paintshop.
You will support our global manufacturing strategy and deliver world-class process and tooling solutions through product implementation programmes, technology innovation and legacy facility and process improvement projects.
Solihull Plant: Quality
We are the pioneers creating the next generation of outstanding vehicles, founded on modern luxury. All of us are shaping the exceptional with soul. We are reimagining the driving of tomorrow and redefining what’s possible.
In this role, you will be integral to the quality of our modern luxury vehicles. You will gain hands-on experience of continuous improvement and problem-solving, seeing the impact of the changes you have made to the delivery of the highest quality vehicles.
Solihull Plant: Plant Launch
In this role, you will contribute to the planning, control and delivery of all new model launch activities for JLR vehicle lines as you support the planning and management of all build activities.
Working closely with the manufacturing team, you will contribute to ensuring we achieve value for money, whilst maintaining safety, quality and delivery objectives. Become Plant Launch Supervisor and you will be responsible for leading a number of product coaches through launch build phases across multiple programmes. This will require strong leadership skills as the team will not be track-bound, requiring a strong focus on the creator’s code.
Solihull Plant: Body in White (BIW)
Our Current Engineering Manufacturing (CME) team drives manufacturing and engineering excellence for current models and influences the delivery of the modern luxury vehicles of the future.
You will enjoy a hands-on experience of continuous improvement and problem-solving, seeing the impact of the changes you have made to the body structure to the highest quality standards.
This is a great opportunity to get involved with, or even lead cross-functional teams in manufacturing, maintenance, planning and logistics to deliver projects fundamental to our future success, whilst gaining real-world experience and invaluable skills.
Solihull Plant: Trim and Final
Our Trim and Final team is responsible for ensuring we optimise our equipment to meet production order volumes and exacting quality and cost targets. Based in the central planning office, you will utilise multiple data streams to identify underperforming assets and implement improvement activities. You will also spend much of your time in our operations area, learning about the day-to-day running of the business and how we are transforming for the future.
Rewards and benefits
Our 2024 undergraduate programme salary will be £21,377. You’ll also enjoy a generous holiday allowance, a discounted car purchase and lease scheme for you and your family, an excellent pension scheme and access to a wide range of deals and discounts from retailers and sports clubs.
You will be applying your curiosity and creativity every day as you begin to hone your skills for a successful, impactful career. You own your development, and only you can make it happen. We’ll be right by your side in your pursuit of exceptional, and we’ll give you all the encouragement and support you need.
What we are looking for
You will need to be on track to achieve at least a 2.2 degree in manufacturing engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, material engineering, or aeronautical or automotive engineering if you have a strong interest in manufacturing.
In addition, you will have real passion for problem-solving and the curiosity to understand business challenges and deliver innovative solutions. You will also have strong numerical and interpersonal skills and the confidence to champion new initiatives.
Please note that our undergraduate placement opportunities are open only to penultimate-year students (those who will be returning to their final year of study or on an integrated master’s after their placement with us).
