Undergraduate Research & Technical Development Engineer June 2024

Job description

BAE Systems do offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements, however it is expected on our Summer Intern Programme you will be required to attend your site 3-4 days per week. Please note, this may be subject to change in line with the needs of the business. The hybrid working arrangements including which days you are required to work on site/remotely will be outlined by your line manager.

Are you interested in a career focused supporting Research and Development (R&D) activities? Do you want to apply advanced and novel academic research in an industrial setting on one of the most complex engineering projects on offer? Do you have an interest in developing new technologies and ensuring they are used within our submarine programmes (Astute, Dreadnought and SSNA [the replacement for the Astute class of submarine]) to help drive innovations in their design and performance? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then we want to hear from you!

What you will be doing

As a Research and Technology Development Undergraduate, you will support engineering teams across our submarine programmes, helping to plan and deliver research projects in areas including submarine design, digital technology and advanced manufacturing. You will help to ensure that all of our research aligns to the demands of the business, by working closely with research teams across the business and also a variety of external stakeholders (e.g. university partners and business partners such as the Ministry of Defence, Rolls Royce and Babcock Marine). You will play a key role in the delivery and implementation of research activities for our submarine programmes and could be involved throughout the submarine’s lifecycle, from concept through to build and commissioning.

We also provide the opportunity to get involved in projects outside of your primary remit. We encourage you to seek a stretch project in which you’ll gain different experiences. With our huge portfolio of products and our multinational presence, there are opportunities to get involved in something different around every corner. Additionally, we encourage involvement in community projects, STEM initiatives and support groups (called employee resource groups) which all provide valuable learning and development experiences that you may not have access to in your day-to-day role. To ensure we retain our talented people, we offer a blend of sponsorship, additional support in career development planning and a portfolio of high potential development programmes. We are also fully committed to supporting graduates to work towards professional registration and Chartership with a range of professional institutes (e.g. the IET and IMechE). Our graduate scheme is accredited with a number of different professional institutes, which means that we have demonstrated high standards of delivery and support.

Our mission is to build a strong, diverse, adaptable, and high performing work force that will develop and grow our future business. We believe that everyone has talent, and at the heart of our talent management approach our ambition is to be recognised as the UK’s top employer in the defence and security sector for valuing diversity and inclusion. Accelerated development will be offered to those who have the aspiration, ability, and performance to fulfil roles that are critical to our future success. Using The Future Talent Programme, we select high potential graduates and provide them with further tailored development opportunities.

Specific activities could include:

The core duties of the Research and Development (R&D) Technology Management Team include but are not limited to:

  • Supporting teams within various departments across BAE Systems Submarines (e.g., engineering, operations, quality, supply chain and project management) to propose and deliver R&D projects;
  • Encouraging and supporting the submission of ideas for new R&D projects from across the whole of BAE Systems Submarines;
  • Helping to ensure that current projects are managed correctly, helping to report progress and keep stakeholders informed and engaged;
  • Liaising with and visiting partner universities across the UK to identify relevant and emergent technologies which could form the basis of future R&D projects at BAE Systems Submarines;
  • When and where appropriate, undertake R&D projects;
  • Support the hand over process of the outputs from completed R&D projects to engineering teams across the different submarine programmes.

The breadth of activities above gives an indication of the wide array of activities carried out by the department. You should note that there is the opportunity to tailor both your Graduate experience and final role to the type of work that you find most enjoyable once you have experienced the different types of roles within the team.

Benefits

You’ll receive benefits including a competitive pension scheme, enhanced annual leave allowance and a Company contributed Share Incentive Plan. You’ll also have access to additional benefits such as flexible working, an employee assistance programme, Cycle2work and employee discounts – you may also be eligible for an annual incentive.
