Our 12-month industry placements give you the opportunity to gain valuable experience whilst complementing your studies and personal and professional growth. This scheme could lead to various career pathways across the Environment Agency and kick start your future!
Our Regulated Industry teams work with UK industry to ensure compliance with Environmental Permitting and COMAH Regulations. We cover a wide range of industrial sectors including chemicals, refineries and metals to reduce environmental impacts and improve process safety to protect people and the environment
During your placement with us you will gain experience and develop skills in areas such as:
- Data management and analysis
- Regulating the environment
- Evaluation of environmental impact
- Industrial Transition for carbon reduction
- Development of environmental standards
- Enforcement
- Environmental Incident management
- Partnership working
- Public engagement
The support you get includes:
- Pastoral support through mentors, office buddies, intern community, and access to the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic network and supporting services
- An industry placement specific welcome event with lots of engagement activities and guest speakers. Access to a wide range of training and development courses
Your placement will be split into 4-month postings into our three main industrial regulation business areas, which are Operations, National Permitting and Environment & Business.
You will see direct impacts of the work we do and understand how we work with operators of industrial facilities to ensure that the industry we regulate is sustainable for the future and provides benefit to society without causing harm to people or the environment.
What we are looking for
You will be someone with a genuine interest in the environment and be passionate about creating a better place for people and wildlife. You will be flexible in your approach and have determination to make positive change happen.
We are looking for applicants who are currently studying, or have studied, a Chemical or Process Engineering degree programme which is accredited by the Institute of Chemical Engineers as well as any of the following skills:
- Team working
- Confidence with data
- Problem-solving
- Engineering knowledge
- Health and safety
Experience/skills can be transferrable. If you volunteer, are a member of a sports team or social club you can use this experience to support your application for a role with us.
You are a UK, Commonwealth or EEA (European Economic Area) national
You have the right to work in the UK
You will have completed a minimum of two years of your degree in a Chemical or Process Engineering discipline* or youu have graduated from an undergraduate degree or master's degree programme in a Chemical or Process Engineering discipline* within the last 12 months (from June 2023)
*If successful, you will be required to give evidence of your qualification (expected or awarded).
