PGCE in Secondary Religious Education — Aisha Butt
Aisha is currently training to be a teacher studying a PGCE in Secondary Religious Education at Edge Hill University
Why did you decide to pursue a postgraduate course?
After studying law for my undergraduate degree I was employed as a manager in a law firm, but decided to move into teaching as I have always had a passion for working with young people.
I wanted to train to teach secondary school pupils as I feel that I can relate well to this age group and like the idea of being able to inspire them to create a good life for themselves. I want to give them every opportunity to succeed in life.
Why did you choose this institution?
I liked how Edge Hill is situated on a beautiful campus and has resources in place for an enjoyable student experience. As well as this, the PGCE in Religious Education looked interesting and accessible, yet challenging.
Tell us about your course…
As part of the course I have gained a lot of subject knowledge and spent time learning about other religions. This has included visiting numerous faith centres where we have had the opportunity to speak with various faith leaders about their religions and beliefs. I have also been on continuing professional development training days with other schools including unity days, community cohesion activities, and English as an additional language training. As well as these, I attended a teaching day with schools in the area which included a talk from a Holocaust survivor who was visiting the university.
What do you hope to do when you graduate?
The skills gained on this course have proven to be extremely beneficial. I have been able to apply this understanding to my professional practice, which has helped me to secure my first teaching position at an academy in Blackburn.
What have you enjoyed about the course?
I have been able to build good relationships with schools and faith leaders in the North West, which has been of real value when I have been on my practical teaching placements. The PGCE has been a great experience and I believe the skills and knowledge I have acquired will help me to thrive in being an inspiring teacher of religious education.
