Initial Teacher Training Graduate Programme

Job description

Embarking on the journey to become a teacher is a decision that can change not only your life, but the lives of countless children in your community. Each day brings you new challenges and rewards, helping you to grow both personally and professionally. At Teach West London we believe that developing best practice first-hand in a supportive school-centred learning environment, with personalised mentoring, is critical to ensuring you have a successful training year.

You’ll benefit from in-school training with expert teacher practitioners from day one, working with an age group or subject you love whilst gaining internationally recognised teaching qualifications. Unlike many other routes into teaching, by choosing to train with Teach West London you’ll be able to make an informed choice about the school or area you want to learn and work in.

Additional benefits

Earn a competitive salary that increases after you qualify and rises with experience. Teach West London offers both unsalaried and selected salaried programmes, with tax-free bursary and scholarships available for some secondary subjects, alongside student loan maintenance support.

*Each school will determine the pay based on experience and other factors, but as a trainee joining on a salaried route in London you can expect to earn between £24,415 – £25,831 in your training year. Whether you train on the salaried or unsalaried route, after gaining QTS you will receive a Year 2 salary of between £34,514 - £36,745 (M1 London pay scale).

There are tax-free DfE training bursaries and scholarships available via the non-salaried route for selected secondary subjects. Bursaries range from £10,000-£28,000, and are available for applicants with a 1st, 2:1, 2:2, PhD or master’s degree. Scholarships range from £27,000-£30,000 and are awarded to high calibre students who pass a robust application and interview process.

As a teacher, you can also receive a wide range of other keyworker benefits including job security, excellent holiday leave, housing for keyworker schemes, and access to a generous pension scheme.

What we are looking for

Teaching isn't a one-size fits all career - all sorts of people can become great teachers. Whether you are an undergraduate, recent graduate, current teaching support staff, or interested in changing careers, we’re looking to recruit applicants who have the potential to become excellent teachers and are committed to developing professional expertise that will make a difference to the lives of children.

Applicants will require an undergraduate degree (or equivalent) by the time the course begins in September, ideally with a 1st, 2:1 or 2:2. To take the PGCE, applicants will need to have a 1st, 2:1 or 2:2 in their undergraduate degree.

We’re looking for applicants who demonstrate a number of other core values for teaching (listed on our website), including but not exclusively:

  • Strong fundamental skills in English and Maths
  • Effective communication skills
  • High quality organisational skills
  • Ability to motivate children.

Specialist subject knowledge:

  • For secondary school applicants, your undergraduate degree should be in, or closely related to the subject you’re applying to train for.
  • All applicants must have at least a Grade 4 / C (or equivalent) in GCSE Maths and English.
  • All applicants for our Primary courses must also have a Grade 4 / C (or equivalent) in a Science subject.
